Join us for a special presentation about the colorful history of Leland's historic fishing village. Sommers recounts the stories of the
commercial fishermen and ferry captains who have worked out of Fishtown for over 100 years, along with tales of adventure and peril on Lake Michigan. She also describes the efforts of a community determined to preserve this iconic attraction. Fishtown was selected as a 2013 Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan. Please note that this presentation will take place at the Empire Township Hall.
Another season of educational and entertaining special events, for kids of all ages, will begin on Thursday, June 20. These programs are free to the public, with no advance registration needed. All programs will take place at the library at 11:00 am, unless otherwise noted.
June 20 Go "geo-exploring" with Lori Taylor, author of the Holly Wild books. June 27 Journey to the Center of the Earth with Pippin Puppets. July 11 Take flight and learn about raptors with Wings of Wonder. July 18 Bang a Drum! Hands-on musical fun with Drummunity.. July 25 Folk music favorites Song of the Lakes present a musical adaptation of the classic kid's book Paddle to the Sea. NOTE: this concert will be held at the Empire Township Hall at 7:00 pm. August 1 Stories & More for preschoolers with Joanne "Yogi" Beare. August 8 Can You Dig It? - ventriloquist Dave Parker ( & his friend Skippy). August 15 What does it mean to fit in? Cari Noga, author of Plover Pilgrimage, explores this topic with middle grade readers. August 22 Nature fun with park rangers from the Sleep Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
