Stories & More for Preschoolers: Fridays @ 11:00 am
Join us for another fun season of weekly gatherings for preschool children and their caregivers. Our own Miss Maryellen will lead the way, sharing engaging stories, songs and hands-on craft activities. No registration is needed – just drop in and join the fun. Sessions take place on Friday mornings throughout the school year.
Leelanau Reads – Catherine Newman / Wreck: May 2, 7:00 pm
The public libraries of Leelanau County invite all area readers to enjoy Wreck, the latest novel by best-selling author Catherine Newman. Copies are available at the library, or via your local bookseller. Join us for a book discussion here at the library on April 30 at 11:00 am. You can also register to attend an interview with the author on Saturday, May 2, at French Valley Winery. To reserve a seat, click here. Spring Break @ the GLCL: March 31 – April 4
Young learners are invited to some special activities during the upcoming break from school. Kids and parents can stop in anytime between 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, with no advance registration needed.
Tuesday, March 31: STEM Kit Open House. Explore our many STEM learning kits – electronics, building sets, microscopes, games and more!
Thursday, April 2: Dinosaur Coloring and Stories. Help create a colorful dinosaur banner and enjoy some fun stories with Miss Maryellen.
Saturday, April 4: Sleeping Bear from Below. Experience the wonders of the Great Lakes in this immersive film from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. NOTE: the film will be shared at the Empire Township Hall, across the street from the library.
Spring Wildflowers – an introduction: April 7, 7:00 pm
Learn about native spring wildflowers in this presentation by Empire resident and amateur naturalist Martina Dorn. She’ll highlight species common to Northern Michigan, and offer details about their unique characteristics and preferred habitat.
Greeting Card Workshop: April 15, 1:00 pm
Join paper crafter Susan Schneider for another installment of this fun workshop, creating a personalized greeting card for that special someone. All supplies are provided, but space is limited, so please contact the library to register by Monday, April 13.
Nature Sketching & Journaling: April 18, 10:00 am
Join the Sleeping Bear Nature Journaling Group for their monthly gathering, lead by artist and environmentalist Penny Krebiehl. Meet at the library first, then head out to explore the local flora and fauna. Bring pens/pencils, sketching pads, water, etc. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather with comfy walking shoes. Registration is not mandatory, but is helpful in the event of schedule changes or inclement weather.
Sharecare of Leelanau: April 21, 1:00 pm
Learn about the many services available to area seniors in this presentation by Dawn Bousamra, executive director of Sharecare of Leelanau. She’ll describe their various programs, including transportation assistance, home visits, and wellness programming.
Documentary Film – The Librarians: April 22, 6:30 pm
Celebrate National Library Week by experiencing this acclaimed documentary film by Kim A. Snyder. It explores the challenges faced by libraries as they exercise their duties to protect intellectual freedom. The film traverses small-town U.S.A. with interviews and archival material to reveal the story of everyday Americans who have become unlikely defenders of democracy. This special screening is sponsored by the Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library.
Tech Tuesday – Password Recovery: April 28, 2:00 pm
Learn how to organize and secure your online passwords, and safely reset them as needed. This hour-long tutorial will be presented by Erin Connolly of the Leelanau Township Library. Tech Tuesdays are hosted in partnership by the public libraries of Leelanau County.
Braver Angels – Depolarizing Ourselves: May 7, 6:00 pm
Learn how to foster positive and respectful communications with people that may have opposing political views in this workshop presented by Braver Angels. Participants will learn:
- How to be more aware of their own “inner polarizer”
- How to be critical without demonizing, dismissing, or stereotyping large swaths of the population.

History Hounds: from the Historical Society of Michigan
Explore fascinating topics in Michigan history with these weekly virtual lectures, presented by the Historical Society of Michigan, and available free of charge to patrons of the Glen Lake Library. Lectures are presented on Tuesday afternoons at noon, or Wednesday evenings at 7:00, in alternating weeks. Register in advance to receive the Zoom meeting link, specifying the Glen Lake Community Library as your member organization.
TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten
Here’s a great new resource to support early childhood learning, delivered right to your cell phone. Register via a brief online form, and receive 8 – 10 text messages per month, each outlining a simple activity you can share with your little one. Or, even more simply, just text TALK to 75547.
