On August 4, 2026 voters in Empire, Glen Arbor & Kasson Townships will consider a proposal to renew the property tax assessment that funds library operations. Here are a few key questions & answers about this proposal.
What is the ballot proposal?
The proposal asks for a renewal of the current assessment of 0.2861 mills ($0.2861 per $1,000 of taxable value). If approved, the millage would fund library operations for six years, beginning in December of this year. The proposed millage assessment would generate $380,000 in the first year.
Why is the library asking for continued millage support?
The millage generates nearly 90% of needed operating income. It was first approved in 1996, and re-approved in 2016 and 2021. It expired this past December, providing funding only through the current year. Renewal of the millage will allow the library to remain open and continue providing services to Glen Lake area residents.
